Incidentally, Rodgers has just showcased his seethe on BT Sport, upon being asked whether he was happy that a three-quarters-fit Daniel Sturridge played a full 90 minutes for England against Germany earlier this week. Sometimes dead air can say so much.

And to the extent that Todd is right, his analysis is unsatisfying, almost question-begging. His observation that "the activist base" provided the motivation is another way of saying that the Senate (on the Democratic side, at least) has become more ideologically polarized. But that's a long-term trend. It doesn't explain why it happened yesterday as opposed to a few months or a year or a few years ago.

I like to think I’m a pretty organised traveller. A few days before I travel I create a pile of stuff – it’s not an organised pile yet, but I reduce it down over the following days. I’ll stand there staring at it, thinking: ‘I might need that. Will I need this?’ It’s tricky to pack because I am often training right up until I fly out for a race, and I can’t pack my cycling shoes if I still need to use them in training. So I normally just pack a bike up early and then I slowly figure out what else I need to take from the big pile. By the way, I’m not a fold-it man. Once I’ve decided what I need, I just throw it all in a bag.
